New Mexico Thrives works to uncover both hidden constraints and opportunities in New Mexico’s nonprofit landscape. While organizations are heads down serving their communities and meeting their charters, they don’t have the bandwith to look into situations or programs that could help them streamline or do more good.  For example, NMT articulates the challenges of New Mexico’s gothic interpretation of the anti-donation clause and addresses it by convening a multi-year cross-sector working group to find a solution that serves everyone, most of all community members.  Additionally, NMT highlights the often-overlooked potential, for example how nonprofits can contract with the state to enhance government efforts, or access capital outlay

Information

Believing in the power of timely information, New Mexico Thrives equips nonprofits with essential insights to navigate challenges in the moment.  For example, keeping nonprofits informed about the current status of federal funding and the latest executive orders affecting their work.

New Mexico Thrives shares information with legislators about the critical services and positive economic impact that nonprofits provide, reminding and highlighting all the ways nonprofits enhance life for their constituents.

New Mexico Thrives informs lawmakers about the importance of nonprofits and what they are doing to make New Mexico communities stronger; and it informs nonprofits about the best ways to work with different levels of government.

Action

New Mexico Thrives provides support to make collective action easy for nonprofits.  While nonprofits are focused on serving their communities, New Mexico Thrives does the upfront work to make it easy for nonprofits to understand various issues that impact their work and how to affect change collectively.  For example, highlighting the salient points of H.R. 9495, the “nonprofit killer” bill, and providing contact information for our Congressional Representatives to convey the potential damage of the bill.

Sometimes, New Mexico Thrives works quietly behind the scenes.  For example, when the state had difficulty mobilizing federal funding for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program during the pandemic, New Mexico Thrives reached out to the Secretary of the Department of Finance and Administration and conveyed how nonprofits could help.  New Mexico went from being at risk of losing millions in federal funding to being in the top five states for distributing housing assistance.

Advocacy

From 2017 through 2019, when the state entertained the idea of taxing nonprofit revenues, New Mexico Thrives advocated to protect nonprofits’ state level tax exempt status.

New Mexico Thrives informs lawmakers about the importance of nonprofits and what they are doing to make New Mexico communities stronger; and it informs nonprofits about the best ways to work with different levels of government.

Our ultimate goal is to serve New Mexico’s nonprofits so they are better able to serve our communities.
